Post Anthropocene
We now live in a time period some scientists have labelled “The Anthropocene”, where the single most influential factor in changes to the natural landscapes and climate of the earth is human impact. This means that we are now shaping the nature of this planet more than other natural processes for the first time in history. This series imagines a world far into the future, where the human race has long since disappeared and in its absence, the nature that has long been tortured and scarred has come alive to heal and re-claim its territory. Whether we became extinct through nuclear war, climate change or other means is unclear, but what is clear is that our legacy in these future landscapes are concrete fossils, slowly being absorbed and becoming part of the new natural landscapes of the earth. Post Anthropocene examines how our actions today shape the natural landscapes of the future. It asks us to look at our current relationships with the landscapes around us, what can we change to create a long lasting and co habitable world for both nature and us to thrive. This series also questions in a world of ever growing tension and conflict, do our borders and conflicts matter in a world that will long outlive our presence? and asks what kind of legacy do we want to leave on this world after we are gone? This series was created using digital infrared photography on a recent trip to the Lake District England. This technique allowed me to distort the colour of the landscapes to a deep blood red, to create a surreal, futuristic landscape that feels familiar and alien in equal measure. The red of the landscapes also symbolises the pain and damage caused to the nature of the planet through human impact. The reoccurring gold orbs represent nature taking action and beginning its process of healing and re building.
